In 2005, Naseem Maat, a massage therapist, survived a near-death experience with diabetes and a blood glucose level of 675 (more than 570 points above normal) while in the hospital for several days.![]()
Naseem credits his recovery to God, his wife (Kathy), his family, and his belief that there was a better way to live. Thanks to his wife who spent the majority of the time with their 3 children (all boys),
Naseem was able to study and research what was going on in his body, and figure out what foods were best for him to fight and reverse his diabetes within 3 months.
Naseem used his experience as a massage therapist and understanding of nutrition to dramatically improve his health by:
- Losing 101 pounds
- Getting rid of the gout
- Getting rid of the night sweats
- Weaning off the insulin shots
- Reversing his diabetes
This was a scary time for Naseem’s wife and their children, who would watch their father inject himself with the insulin. But, this motivated Naseem, because he realized that he needed to defeat his diabetes if he was going to be healthy enough to provide for his family and set a better example for his children.
Once Naseem reversed his diabetes, various people noticed the weight loss and asked him how he did it. This led Naseem to share his story of recovery with others, who were also suffering with Type 2 diabetes, obesity, and too many prescription medications. With the support of his sister-in-law (who owns a health training facility), Naseem began conducting diabetes lectures and sharing his story with people in the community.
Naseem states emphatically: “This may sound strange, but diabetes saved my life! Being in the hospital with a blood sugar over 600 was so scary that it motivated me to find a way to get healthy.”
Naseem’s Story Part 2
As previously mentioned, diabetes saved Naseem’s life! Being in the hospital with a blood sugar over 600 was so scary that it motivated him to find a way to get healthy.
While lying down in the hospital bed looking up at his three boys (who were staring down at him), Naseem had a past vision of him and his three brothers staring down at their father lying in a hospital bed dying from cancer. Naseem remembers being afraid that this was going to be the last time they were going to see their father alive. And, it turned out that he was right — his father eventually died from cancer. That’s the way Naseem felt when he saw his 3 boys looking down at him; and, that’s when he knew it was time to change.
Naseem walked everyday, 7 days a week, in the rain and when it was extremely cold. He was scared if he missed a day. He ate only salads, especially peppers all kinds, sometimes he would just have a pepper salad with onions, garlic, carrots, alfalfa, broccoli, and tomatoes.
Then he noticed the weight was coming off so fast he felt weak. So he started looking at why he was feeling this way. He started researching some other material and noticed protein was missing. So he added beans and soybean products and the weakness went away instantly. He would buy frozen fruit and put that into a blender, add some water and make a smoothie every day after a workout. At that time he started drinking water with organic apple cider vinegar and lemon juice every morning. Vitamins included Bilberry, Saw Palmetto, Chromium, CoQ10, L Carnitine, C, E, Hawthorne berry, Cayenne peppers, Germanium and Barley greens.
Naseem’s wife and children remember what it was like because when he would bring it up they were reluctant to comment on it. They didn’t want to remember him getting the cold sweats when he was out of insulin. And, they recall when his sugar was low and sweat was pouring off him like he just got out of the swimming pool.
No one ever told him that you have to eat to raise your sugar level. So his oldest son panicked and hollered to his mother that something was wrong with dad — he doesn’t look right. So Naseem’s wife put everyone in the car and she drove 200 miles per hour to the pharmacy and they filled his prescription. Naseem had to ask the pharmacist how to use the needle to inject myself because the needle they used in the hospital was different. He had to go in the rest room of the pharmacy to give himself an injection and then he ate.
Naseem would let his boy’s watch him give himself injections because he would remind them “you don’t want to experience this when you become an adult”. He also tell them it was their help that he’s here today. The major role the family played was being quite and giving him a chance to rest.
They went for walks with Naseem and they still do, “reluctantly” because they think his walks are too long. He tells them “You guys are on the track team and you think this is long”
Naseem says it was his wife who spent the most time with the boys so he could study what’s going on with his body. She made sure their homework was done and transported them to many places.
Naseem Maat states emphatically: “All that I am and all that I hope to become, I have to give it to my wife.”
FYI: Naseem has 3 boys; his middle son likes to do pH testing to see which foods were acid or alkaline. They would test all kinds of food to see which one is good for the body using pH strips or pH paper. And, he has read and listened to Mr. McCulley (author of “Death to Diabetes”) speak about his mother and daughter — it was very inspiring.
Naseem and his wife had a business for 15 years — they sold African imports, cards, books and many other gift items.
Massage Therapy
Naseem is a licensed massage therapist (LMT) in Florida.
Naseem uses a body cushion on top of the massage table to give clients extra comfort and it makes them feel like they’re floating in air. Normally when you get a massage you lay on a massage table and start the massage which feels uncomfortable sometimes because someone is pressing down on your body especially if you’re female. With Naseem, he places the client’s feet into a foot massage tub for 5 – 10 minutes and then does aroma therapy, where the client inhales natural oils which instantly go into their blood stream and produce a calming effect.
Then they lie down on the massage table which has the body cushion, then he starts the massage. Most massage therapists use massage oils or lotions which contain too many chemicals which get absorbed into the blood stream through the skin. Naseem uses organic olive oil — because of the many benefits inside the body you want the same beneficial effects on the outside of the body. He does the same thing when he does chair massage and the first 5 minutes is free.
Naseem hopes that he will be able to share his story and help more people struggling with their diabetes.
